Charter Chat is published weekly by Friends of Choice in Urban Schools, better known as FOCUS, a nonprofit organization that supports quality public charter schools in the District of Columbia. We hope that you find the resources and information in this e-newsletter useful.

Submission Instructions: The more submissions we have, the more useful this e-newsletter will be! Email us at charterchat@focusdc.org to submit youth-oriented and family-friendly events and resources to include in future newsletters with “for charter chat” in the subject line. Please submit entries in the format found in the newsletter below. Entries must be received by COB Monday to be included in the Wednesday edition that week. We generally include entries three weeks in advance of the event date, deadline, or activity start date. We may provide more lead-time for contests, scholarships, competitions, etc. where time for preparation is required.

WHAT: Pendragwn Youth Film Festival (PYFF)—5 weeks left to submit!
WHEN: Submission deadline: February 10, 2012
WHERE: PYFF 2012 will be held on March 24, 2012 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street in Washington, DC
DETAILS: Created by the Pendragwn Film Foundation, PYFF seeks to contribute to society through the power of storytelling by helping talented youth grow as filmmakers and artists. We invite YOU, the best and the brightest 11 to 18 year olds, to participate in PYFF. Make us laugh, make us cry, educate us or give us hope but do it through film. YOU choose the story, YOU provide the content and YOU produce YOUR film. Have fun with friends and family during the filmmaking process and come see your film on the big screen! Shoot. Edit. Submit. This event is free of charge.

WHAT: Apply now to become an Inspired Teaching Fellow
WHEN: Priority deadline of January 25th; Final deadline of February 26
DETAILS: Center for Inspired Teaching is accepting applications for a 24-month state accredited teacher certification program that recruits, selects, prepares and supports exceptional individuals who wish to serve the children of the District of Columbia as teachers. Inspired Teaching Fellows learn the skills and dispositions of Inspired Teachers who recognize each child's innate desire to learn and build on individual strengths to maximize academic, social and emotional achievement.
Inspired Teaching Fellows begin their teaching career with a 12-month Residency year, working under the guidance of a Lead Teacher, allowing them to gain the knowledge and experience to enable a smooth transition into the teaching career. Fellows then continue attending coursework and receiving increased mentoring during the Fellowship year of the program, as a teacher of record. Inspired Teachers are certified in Early Childhood (PreK-3) or Elementary Education (1-6).
