Charter Chat is published weekly by Friends of Choice in Urban Schools, better known as FOCUS, a nonprofit organization that supports quality public charter schools in the District of Columbia. We hope that you find the resources and information in this e-newsletter useful.

Submission Instructions: The more submissions we have, the more useful this e-newsletter will be! Email us at charterchat@focusdc.org to submit youth-oriented and family-friendly events and resources to include in future newsletters with “for charter chat” in the subject line. Please submit entries in the format found in the newsletter below. Entries must be received by COB Monday to be included in the Wednesday edition that week. We generally include entries three weeks in advance of the event date, deadline, or activity start date. We may provide more lead-time for contests, scholarships, competitions, etc. where time for preparation is required.

UPCOMING EVENTS
WHAT: DC Public Charter School Board Public Hearing
WHEN: Monday, June 18 at 7:30 pm

DETAILS: The DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) is accepting public comment on two proposed policies to protect student records and revise criteria for schools that request an increase in their enrollment ceiling. The proposed policies are: Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) Policy and the Enrollment Ceiling Increase Policy. The FERPA policy will strengthen how student records are shared and protected as well as adopt a model policy for all DC charter schools. The Enrollment Ceiling Increase Policy revises the criteria that will be applied when a charter school requests an enrollment ceiling increase. The proposed policies are available on the PCSB website at http://www.dcpubliccharter.com/About-the-Board/Board-Policies.aspx.

WHAT: Summer 2012 with the DC Youth Orchestra Program
WHEN: The summer semester runs from Monday, July 16- August 3, 2012 class times vary between 5:30pm-7:30pm on Mondays and Thursdays.

DETAILS: DCYOP offers beginner and intermediate classes in violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion, guitar, and recorder for students from ages 4½ to 19. Register online at www.dcyop.org!

WHAT: The Lady in Me Personal Enrichment Camp for Teenage Girls age 14-18

DETAILS: ImageWorks presents the 2012 Lady in Me personal enrichment camp for teenage girls. Image and style would be nothing without self-esteem, confidence, and the right attitude. The Lady in Me week-long summer camp will teach your teen how to love herself and build self-confidence. The camp will feature open discussions, professional guest speakers and hands-on demonstrations. The final act will include a graduation brunch to showcase how far they've come. This is not your ordinary day camp...the Lady in Me summer camp is geared to inspire, motivate, enhance and empower young women ages 14-18. Our mission is to transform girls into ladies from the inside out.
The camp experience will teach your teen girl to look good and feel good about who they are. Workshops include:

WHAT: Medical Museum Science Café: “Reconciling the Past: Recovery and Identification of the Missing in Cyprus” – a presentation by Istenc Engin, Maria Chrystalla Kyrkimtzi, Erdinc Usta and Maria Constantinou

DETAILS: Join the scientific staff from the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) for an in-depth talk about their work on the recovery and identification of missing persons in Cyprus. The CMP investigates cases of persons reported missing as a result of armed conflict during the 1960s and 1970s. A total of 502 Turkish Cypriots and 1,493 Greek Cypriots were officially reported as missing. Hosted by the National Museum of Health and Medicine. Open to the public; no RSVP required.

WHAT: Native Festival: Choctaw Days
WHEN: Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
WHERE: American Indian Museum
DETAILS: The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma celebrates its tribal history and heritage with four days of food, workshops, and performances. The tribe's rich military tradition, from "Little Brother of War” (stickball) warriors and Code Talkers during World War I to modern-day soldiers, is also honored. Other activities include Native dance and singing performances, storytelling programs, and booths showcasing beadwork, pottery, flutes, the Choctaw language, and tribal cooking.
