D.C. Mayor Bowser Seeks More Charter School Funding
The Washington Informer
May 26, 2015

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has requested the city council make changes to the proposed fiscal 2015 budget and 2016 budget to accommodate a funding increase to the city's public charter schools.

Bowser sent a letter the council earlier this month, asking for $62 per student in fiscal 2015 and approximately $85 in fiscal 2016 for public charter school facilities.

"We heard the concerns and are responding in order to address a need that will better serve our public charter schools," she said. "This is one step forward in our effort to improve equity and collaboration across our education sectors as we build pathways to the middle class."

Bowser, along with Deputy Mayor for Education Jennifer Niles, has also sought to include funding increases for facilities in the 2015 revised spending plan and 2016 budget to address disparities in funding between public charter and traditional public schools.

"Improving equity has been a top priority since I began this role," Niles said. "We recognize disparities exist, and I am looking forward to ensuring our sectors are working together to end them."

Charter school officials have emphasized the need for additional city funding as a way to continue to make investments in their facilities.

"We appreciate the mayor's commitment to supporting quality public charter school options" said Scott Pearson, executive director of the DC Public Charter School Board. "For too long, many public charter schools have been forced to cope with inadequate facilities. These funds are a crucial step toward those inequities."
