Welcome old and new subscribers! Charter Chat is published weekly by Friends of Choice in Urban Schools, better known as FOCUS, a nonprofit organization that supports quality public charter schools in the District of Columbia. We hope that you find the resources and information in this e-newsletter useful.

Submission Instructions:The more submissions we have, the more useful this e-newsletter will be! Email us at charterchat@focusdc.org to submit youth-oriented and family-friendly events and resources to include in future newsletters with “for charter chat” in the subject line. Please submit entries in the format found in the newsletter below. Entries must be received by COB Monday to be included in the Wednesday edition that week. We generally include entries three weeks in advance of the event date, deadline, or activity start date. We may provide more lead-time for contests, scholarships, competitions, etc. where time for preparation is required.

For many of us, our fathers, uncles, and grandfathers are our heroes. We appreciate them for their love and guidance. A good father can set an example of strength, honor, sacrifice, and responsibility. On Father's Day, we honor dads for their love and the lessons they have taught us. WHAT: World Children’s Festival 2011

WHEN: Friday, June 17, to Sunday, June 19, 2011, 10:00 AM-5:00 PM

WHERE: National Mall, Between 4th and 7th Streets NW, WDC 20565

DETAILS: The World Children’s Festival, held on the National Mall in Washington, DC, will be the world’s largest celebration of children’s creativity and imagination bringing together hundreds of young artists and performers from around the world. During this three-day festival, the National Mall will be transformed to create an amazing experience for the participants as well as the general public. The event is held every four years and includes crafts, workshops, performances, and activities suitable for ages 4 to 84. The World Children’s Festival is a culmination of the Arts Olympiad, a free global program of the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) in which millions of children worldwide competed to win the honor to represent their home state or country. Eminent educators and field experts ranging from Olympians and professional artists to scientists and technologists host workshops and activities to nurture children’s creativity and develop their empathy in a global community setting.

WHAT: U.S. Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge

DETAILS: The U.S. Navy SEAL has contracted Voices, Inc. and Equals Three Communications to raise awareness among African Americans, age 16-25, and encourage them to participate in the Navy Seal Fitness Challenge at Howard University. The challenge is open to competitors ages 16-25. The Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge consists of a 500-yard swim, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.

WHEN:Check the calendar for a schedule of events at your neighborhood library

WHERE: To begin your journey with Summer Reading, visit any DC Public Library, and pick up a passport. Earn credit by reading a book or attending a summer reading program.

DETAILS:The One World, Many Stories Summer Reading Program encourages children ages birth to 12 to expand their horizons by reading and learning about other lands. Children will explore cultures through reading, hear stories from people who have traveled and enjoy an array of music, dance and games from around the world. Each page in your passport represents a different continent, with the circles representing 15 minutes of activity.

·       Color the circles to indicate time spent reading or attending a library program.

·       Fill in at least four circles on each page to complete the program.

·       Bring your completed passport to your neighborhood library to receive a prize.

Since we run the camps in our own facilities using our own equipment, and therefore don't have the expense of an outside facility, we are able to keep our camp sessions small and personalized. An inspirational autobiography in which Moorer (once an inner-city youth) shares his 15-year journey, espousing how God transformed his life and took him from college flunk-out to engineer and, ultimately, to university professor. WHAT:2011 Summer Internship Opportunities with the Voice of Midlife and Older Women

DETAILS:If you are looking for a challenging internship where you can be part of a team and learn concrete skills, OWL is the place for you. You'll work with experienced professionals who are interested in mentoring interns. You'll learn first hand what its like to work at a fast-paced, national non-profit membership organization. You'll leave your internship experience knowing you made a valuable and lasting contribution to a worthwhile cause. OWL has several internship opportunities available for graduate and qualified undergraduate students. OWL prefers interns who can make at least a 3-month commitment, and have relevant academic and/or professional experience. Strong communications skills and computer proficiency are required. WHAT:Urban Ed Seeking Two Youth Workers for Safe Summer Program

DETAILS:Urban Ed is seeking two strong candidates to serve as youth workers for our special Safe Summer program for teenagers ages 14-15 this summer. We are looking for candidates to begin as soon as Monday, June 13. Urban Ed, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides District of Columbia children, youth, and adults with technology-driven education, information and skill development for sustained futures. This position is for a youth worker to support our Pathways to Prosperity teen program during the summer months. The youth worker should have a youth development background preferably with at-risk populations or youth in need of supervision. Knowledge of state and federal education standards a plus but not mandatory. Experience with training and curriculum development a strong plus. Experience tutoring and mentoring low-performing youth also helpful. The ideal candidate will have advanced technology skills in Microsoft Office, be organized, detail-oriented and responsible. Able to work with teams yet independently, take initiative and require minimal supervision are customary in our work environment. This is a part-time, temporary position from Jun 13 – Aug 17. Urban Ed seeks individuals with demonstrated energy and compassion for youth and community work.

WHAT:The Cato Institute Internship Program 2011

DEADLINE:Friday, July 1, 2011

DETAILS:Cato interns assist policy staff as researchers; work with the conference department to organize policy conferences, debates, and forums; attend seminars and conferences; and assist Cato's professional staff by copying and filing newspaper articles, distributing materials to congressional offices, and preparing mailings. In addition to their research and other duties, interns take part in regular seminars on politics, economics, law, and philosophy, as well as a series of lectures and films on libertarian themes. (Summer interns are also encouraged, but not required, to play on the Institute's softball team.) Cato internships are for undergraduates, regardless of major, recent graduates, graduate students, or law students who have a strong commitment to individual liberty, private property, free markets, limited government, and the philosophy of classical, or market, liberalism.

WHAT:The Heritage Foundation Internship Program 2011

DEADLINE:Friday, July 1, 2011

DETAILS:Applications should demonstrate strong research and writing talents, excellent communication skills, and the inquisitiveness to undertake various research, writing, administrative, and computer projects. All interns are paid at the rate of $7.25 per hour. Each semester, interns are required to begin on the start date and intern through the end date.  The Heritage Foundation's Fall Intern Program begins in late August and ends in December. During the fall term, Heritage will accept approximately 50 interns. Interns may work part-time (a minimum of 24 hours per week), to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

WHAT:Reading Comprehension Professional Development Opportunity Through FOCUS and WestEd

WHEN:Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 5:00-7:30 PM

DETAILS:FOCUS is partnering with WestEd to provide a professional development opportunity for public charter school science, math, history, and English teachers. This online module will focus on reading comprehension: Strategies for Text Discussion and Data-Driven instruction, and will be aligned with the common core standards. An in-person kickoff will be held on the evening of August 9th (dinner provided), followed by 7 weeks of online training to be completed on your schedule, with coursework anticipated to take 2 hours per week. WHAT:Tom's of Maine Announces "50 States for Good" Program to Honor Nonprofit Organizations

DEADLINE:Tuesday, June 21, 2011

DETAILS:Tom's of Maine has launched its annual "50 States for Good" program, which seeks to support community nonprofit organizations in completing volunteer-driven projects. Any qualifying 501(c)(3) in good standing with an organizational operating budget under $2 million is eligible to apply. Organizations must work on projects, with the help of community volunteers, that relate to "environmental goodness, healthy human goodness, or animal goodness."
